We don’t try to list every venue in the country. We recommend the ones we know well and would happily send a friend to, and we’re honest about the ones we wouldn’t.

We’re a Marbella-based team, and we’ve planned enough weddings across Spain to know where couples get caught out. That’s what you’re really paying for: not a brochure, but people on the ground who tell you the truth.
We know these venues first-hand. We’ve toured them, worked at them, and stood in them at ceremony time, so when we recommend one it’s because we’d send a friend there. And when a venue is wrong for your numbers, your budget or your month, we’ll say so. That’s the whole point of asking someone who has been there. And on the day itself, our on-the-day coordination means the couple are the least busy people there. Spring
Spring: March to May, is one of the loveliest times to marry in Spain. The days are warm and the skies mostly clear, perfect for an outdoor ceremony without the intensity of the summer heat. You’ll also miss the peak-season crowds, so venues are calmer, quieter and often easier to book. It’s a beautiful time to be here, too: the countryside is green and in bloom, and many regions hold their spring festivals, giving your celebration a colourful, unmistakably Spanish backdrop.

Thinking About a Wedding in Spain
Weddings
A destination wedding doesn’t need a long guest list to feel like an occasion. More couples are marrying with thirty or forty people rather than a hundred and fifty, and it’s rarely about budget. It’s that you can actually talk to everyone.
Spain suits this well. Villas above Marbella, coastal properties on Mijas Costa, small fincas inland towards Ronda: places built at that scale rather than large venues scaled down. A room for two hundred holding forty feels empty however well you style it, so look for somewhere whose maximum is close to your number.
What you gain is time. With everyone staying on site, the wedding becomes a long weekend rather than a Saturday, and those extra days are usually what people remember.
Elopemements
Eloping is the wedding stripped back to the part that matters. No seating plan, no speeches, no managing anyone’s expectations. Just the two of you, somewhere beautiful, and the rest of the day free.
Spain makes it straightforward. A clifftop above the Mediterranean, a courtyard in a white village, the gorge at Ronda, the Tramuntana mountains in Mallorca. Somewhere that means something to you rather than somewhere that seats a hundred and twenty.
It’s also quick to organise. Most elopements come together in weeks rather than months: a celebrant, a photographer, somewhere to stand and somewhere good for dinner afterwards. – Bring nobody, or bring ten. Both work.
Vow Renewal
A vow renewal has one advantage over a wedding: nothing about it is compulsory. No paperwork, no registry, no expectations to manage. You choose what happens and in what order, which means it can be an hour on a beach or a full weekend with everyone who couldn’t make the first one.
Spain gives you the range. Coastal hotels, hillside villas, historic estates, or the courtyard of a small church in a white village. Couples renewing vows often pick somewhere with a connection: where you honeymooned or where you holidayed.
Children and grandchildren often play a part, and it tends to be the thing that makes the day.
Types of Wedding Ceremonies
Symbolic Weddings in Spain
A symbolic ceremony is what most of our couples choose, and it’s worth understanding why. It carries no legal weight in Spain, which sounds like a drawback and is really the point: no paperwork, no residency question, no registry timetable deciding your date.
You marry legally at home, usually a short appointment at a register office with two witnesses, then hold the ceremony you actually care about out here. That frees you completely. Any venue you like, in any language, rather than a government building in Spanish. A celebrant writes the ceremony around you instead of reading from a script, so hand-fastings, sand rituals, a friend officiating or vows in two languages are all straightforward.

- Fully personal, in any language, with a celebrant of your choosing
- Do the legal marriage at home, usually before you travel
- Not legally binding in Spain, so it doesn’t replace a civil ceremony
Legal Weddings in Spain
A legally binding civil wedding in Spain is difficult for non-residents, and this is the part most often reported wrongly online.
The process runs through a marriage file, the expediente matrimonial, opened at the Civil Registry. In practice, registries expect at least one of you to hold empadronamiento, formal registration on the local census, in the municipality where you marry. Some apply a two-year residency rule, others only ask for current registration. It varies by province and occasionally by the individual office handling your file. So if this route matters to you, ask your chosen town’s registry before you book anything else.

- Allow four to six months, plus interviews, sworn translations and apostilles

Religious Weddings in Spain
A Catholic ceremony is legally recognised in Spain and doesn’t carry the residency requirement in the same way, which makes it the one route to a legally binding wedding here that’s realistically open to non-residents.
The conditions are strict. At least one of you must be a baptised Catholic, though most parishes will want to discuss your particular situation. Your baptism certificate usually has to have been issued within the last six months and carry a note confirming you haven’t been married before, so don’t request it too early.

- The marriage must still be entered on the Civil Registry: the church route adds a step, it doesn’t remove one
- Certificates must usually be recent, so time your requests carefully
- Protestant, Jewish and Islamic ceremonies are also recognised

These national figures provide a useful starting point, but destination weddings can vary considerably. What's The Average Cost of a Wedding?
What Time of The Year Should we Avoid?
Yes. Spain has national, regional and local holidays, and each municipality can add up to two local public holidays each year. Exact dates can therefore differ between Marbella, Mallorca, Barcelona, Valencia, Ibiza and other wedding destinations.
Public holidays do not necessarily prevent a wedding from taking place, but they can affect supplier availability, accommodation prices, transport, traffic and venue access. Dates worth checking include:
- Semana Santa, particularly in Andalucía, where large processions can cause road closures and very high accommodation demand.
- Las Fallas in Valencia, especially from 15 to 19 March.
- Feria de Abril in Seville and other regional fairs.
- San Juan, celebrated around 23 and 24 June in many coastal areas.
- Feria de Málaga, normally held during August.
- La Mercè in Barcelona, around 24 September.
- Major national holidays such as 1 May, 15 August, 12 October, 6 and 8 December, and Christmas.

Common Questions
Can two British citizens who live in the UK legally get married in Spain?
Possibly, but you should not book a legal ceremony until the local Civil Registry has confirmed your eligibility in writing. Spanish government guidance says two foreign nationals may marry in Spain under Spanish law or the personal law of either partner. However, current GOV.UK guidance for British nationals says that either you or your partner must live in Spain or be a Spanish national. The practical process is handled locally, so requirements can differ between municipalities.

Do we need to be Spanish residents to hold our wedding there?
Not for a symbolic ceremony. You can celebrate at a villa, finca, hotel, beach club or private estate without either of you living in Spain. Residency and nationality become more important when you want the ceremony in Spain to create the legal marriage.
Will guests know that our Spanish ceremony is symbolic?
Only when you choose to tell them. – A symbolic ceremony can still include your entrance, readings, vows, ring exchange, music and certificate signing. It can be just as personal and emotional as a civil ceremony, with far more freedom over where it takes place and what is said.

What documents might we need for a legal wedding in Spain?
There is no universal checklist because the requirements depend on your nationalities, residency, previous marital status and the Civil Registry handling the application.
British couples may be asked for passports, full birth certificates, proof of residence and documents confirming that they are legally free to marry. Divorce papers or a former spouse’s death certificate may also be needed where applicable. Some British applicants require a Certificate of No Impediment or Marital Status Certificate. Documents may need an apostille and an official Spanish translation.
Contact the Civil Registry before ordering documents. Some certificates must be recently issued, so applying too early can cause almost as many problems as leaving everything too late.
Can we have a legally recognised Catholic wedding in Spain?
Yes, it may be possible, but the process needs to begin well in advance. You will normally need to work with your home parish and the Catholic church in Spain. Baptism certificates, confirmation details, marriage preparation and evidence that you are free to marry may be requested. The paperwork is usually transferred between the relevant dioceses before the ceremony.
Spanish law recognises certain religious forms of marriage, but the correct church and civil registration procedures must be completed.
Is €25,000 to €30,000 realistic for 50 to 60 guests?
Yes, depending on the venue, location and what the budget needs to include. Recent studies place the average cost of a wedding in Spain between approximately €25,000 and €32,000, although destination weddings can be structured very differently from local Spanish celebrations.

How much should we budget for 80 to 100 guests?
There is no honest one-size-fits-all figure. A relaxed finca wedding with simple styling will not cost the same as an exclusive coastal villa with premium catering, live entertainment and several days of events.
Start by deciding what the budget includes. Is it just the wedding day, or must it also cover accommodation, guest transfers, a welcome party, a farewell lunch, outfits and flights?
Catering, drinks, staffing and transport normally rise with every additional guest. Venue hire, photography and entertainment may remain relatively stable, but the overall cost can still climb quickly.

Does the venue price include catering, furniture, staff and IVA?
Sometimes. In other cases, the price covers little more than access to the property. Ask for an itemised quotation showing catering, drinks, furniture, linen, staffing, cleaning, security and IVA. Our venue-sourcing service compares what is actually included, not just the headline hire price.
What hidden wedding costs should we look out for?
The biggest surprises often appear with dry-hire venues. The initial fee can look attractive until you add chairs, tables, linen, catering equipment, lighting, sound systems, generators, toilets and staffing.
Also check for corkage, cake-cutting fees, supplier meals, cleaning, security, furniture delivery, overtime, setup access, accommodation minimums and charges for using the indoor backup area.

How can we protect ourselves if a venue or supplier cancels?
A wedding contract should explain refund conditions, date changes, force majeure, replacement suppliers and what happens if the business cannot provide the agreed service. Keep every contract, invoice, receipt and payment confirmation together.
Wedding insurance may offer additional protection, but you should confirm that overseas venues and suppliers are covered.

Can we buy wedding clothing and jewellery in Spain?
Yes. Spain has an excellent choice of bridal boutiques, independent designers, suit specialists, shoemakers and jewellers. You can shop for your wedding dress, bridal accessories, groom’s suit, wedding rings, gifts for the wedding party and outfits for pre-wedding events.
Allow enough time for fittings and alterations, particularly when ordering a made-to-measure dress or suit. Couples travelling specifically for appointments should also leave space in the schedule for a second fitting or collection.

Can we hold a three or four-day wedding celebration at one venue?
Absolutely, provided the venue allows multi-day events and has suitable accommodation, licences and facilities.
A typical celebration might begin with welcome drinks or an informal dinner on the first evening. The following day could include a pool party, beach trip, wine tasting or relaxed gathering before the main wedding. After the wedding day, you might finish with a farewell brunch, barbecue or day beside the pool.
Some Spanish villas, fincas and private estates are ideal for this because they offer exclusive use and on-site accommodation. Others permit the wedding itself but restrict music, catering or external guests on additional days.
